Lunchtime Waste

Room 9 have started to look at our school environment and find ways to make it better.

One of the ways we can improve it is by reducing the amount of waste and rubbish we have at school.  We started by collecting our waste on Friday*.  Here’s what we discovered (click the picture for a LARGER view).

What do you think?  Is there anything we could easily get rid of?  Which items can be recycled or composted?  Which items can’t be reused or recycled?  What would a week of waste look like?

  1. Hi Room 9,
We thing you can get rid of packets and plastic food wraps by putting them in a recycling bin. You can put fruit skins and sandwich leftovers in a compost bin. Paper bags could also be recycled.

  2. It seems like a lot of rubbish. I don’t like throwing out good food. Maybe you could take the food and fruit that is still good home. Amy and Celia’s idea about composting is a good one too. We would like to see if you can reduce it. If you don’t buy little individual chippie packets you can put them in little containers that would lose a whole are. Good luck kia kaha. 3. We recycle all of our food scraps, into bosheki bins. The bins of food then go into the soil and act as compost. We also recycle all of our paper. We too would like to get rid of the chippie packets – we had a no rubbish day at school where noone was allowed to bring anything wrapped in gladwrap. That was really interesting to see how we could use other things rather than gladwrap. Good luck with your project. Mrs W from Lytton Street School
