Mighty Beanz and Lego Man

Mighty Beanz and a Lego man.  Mighty Beanz have a track to play on.  My friend Bradley has one. The Lego man is my favourite one because he has a fire-fighter’s uniform and a building hat and the best thing is it is red. Hamster Bean is so cute. My good one is Nerd Bean because snot is coming out of its nose.  Buff Bean likes to exercise in the middle of nowhere! And Ally cat is vicious like any other cat.

P.S. The pictures are blurry because the lens of my phone is dirty.  It used to be my dad’s phone and it is old.  He gave it to me because he got a new phone and it is way smaller.  My phone is a Nokia E65-1.  It is a slide phone.

Bottlesauruses

Room 13 have been making dinosaurs from soda bottles, card, parcel tape, kitchen roll and PVA glue.  Here are a few to give you a better idea about how they are made.  More to come soon…

Skipping

The whole school skipped on Friday morning.  We were raising money for the Heart Foundation through Jump Rope for Heart.  Here’s Room 13 with their skipping.

Plesiosaurs

A plesiosaur is a member of the sea reptile family and the name Plesiosaurs means “close to lizard”.  A plesiosaur is not a dinosaur.  Instead it’s a sea reptile.

A plesiosaur has 2 front flippers, 2 back flippers, a short tail, sharp pointy teeth and a very long neck.

They were mostly found in Europe and probably lived about 200 million years ago. Plesiosaurs are found in shallow seas and even freshwater lakes.

They are very fast and they had curved teeth useful for catching fish, but not for chewing or crushing. It’s also likely that they caught and ate the squid-like creatures that existed at the time. Some plesiosaur fossils have stones preserved in the stomach area, showing that they swallowed stones (called gastroliths) to grind up food in their stomachs.

They were able to dive down, but they fed near the surface and had no need to go deep. Being reptiles they had to breathe air, so there would have to be good reason for them to leave the surface for a very long time.

Right now there are no more because they are extinct.

Hoop La!

Room 13 and the other year 4 classes have had Wintec students at school for the last few weeks.  Here’s one of the activities we did with them.

Skype

Today we had a Skype video call with Winton School near Invercargill.

Room 4’s school have started wearing sunhats and wanted to know what we did with ours to stop people from losing them.  We said that all our hats are named.  Room 4 couldn’t add names to their hats because they belong to the school and are part of the school uniform.  They can’t write on the hats or do anything that might mark them.

We’re having a big think about what to do and will call them back later in the week.

Room 13

We’d also like to connect with other classrooms around the world.  Drop us an email or leave a comment if you’re interested.

Soundscape 1 – The Beach

One fine day at the beach the waves whooshed over the shore.  Suddenly it started to rain, the sand was flying everywhere like a tornado.  The waves crashed against the rock pools.  The birds squirmed all over the sky, people ran and screamed in all directions rushing to their cars.   Suddenly some one yelled “Be still!”  Everything was silent as the waves washed over the shore softly.

Production Wordle

Hi Room 13.  I made a Wordle from your Production google document. Click the picture to see it full size.  What do you think?  Is there anything missing?  You can add ideas in the comments if you like.

Your Face in Space

My daughter knows I love everything to do with space and space travel so she sent me a link to this site.  You can be a part of space history and send your photo to space aboard the last space shuttle missions.  If you want to do it you’ll have to get a parent to help because you have to be over 13 to take part.

If you want to do this at school ask your parent(s) to write me a note giving permission.  I’ve already done mine and I can’t wait to get the certificate in November when STS-134 (Endeavour) lands back on earth.

Here’s me at school last year with astronaut Colonel Eric Boe.  He was the pilot of the Endeavour in November 2008.

BP Oil Spill Disaster

Do you remember the oil spill we were discussing a few weeks ago?  Well it’s still leaking.  Here’s what it wold look like if it had happened in Hamilton (click the map for a larger view).

Imagine all that oil in the ocean.  What effect do you think it will have on the creatures that live and feed there?  What about the beaches nearby?  How on earth are they going to fix it?  Add your thoughts to the comments.

Here’s the website where I found the map.

Table Tennis

A hard, fast ping-pong ball going to swoop across the table.  I hit it as hard as I could!

Burma Trail

When we got to the Burma Trail it was icy cold.  I let go of the rope and fell on the bumpy and slippery ground.  I fell down ditches all the time.

When we got back to camp hot chocolate and biscuits were waiting for us.

Interface

Wow! We got featured on a website.

Interface is a magazine and website that lets teachers learn more about how to use ICT and technology in their classrooms.  They featured us on their webpage with two other class blogs, Moturoa Blog in Nelson and Livewires in Puahue.  Awesome!

At the Burma Trail

It was dim and dark at night.  I held on to the thick string, walking over the roots and through the trees, leaves crashing behind me, the wind slowly swishing on me.  It all happened at the Burma Trail.
